After researching grids as can be seen on my context blog ive begun to pay around with different grids. The Blue rectangles represent text on the page and how it could possibly be laid out.

As this brief is directed for teachers who need to check up on their knowledge when in a bad situation it feels appropriate to have the catalogue as a small format. Im going for A5 at the moment, this may change. This way the teacher can look at the book without too much attention being attracted.

Began playing with 2 to 4 tools to create an upper case lower case, numbers and punctuation. I made sure the x height was the same and the ascender and descender remained the same length which related to the uppercase and the numbers.
Feel this is working miles better. It plays with negative and positive space more with some of the shapes being quite heavy in weight. I'm happy with this outcome but could do with testing it to see how legible it is.

Above is the typeface ive created, well, the upper case of it. Although it's all to scale i don't think it works over well. It's too illustrated and doesnt play with the shapes of the tools enough, instead collages them to form letter forms. I'm going to start again but limit myself to 2 to 4 tools per letter form.

Began playing with the tools to create letterforms in my back garden. I like that it is working to without having to manipulate the scale of the tools.
So i photographed various tools that i think play key parts in technology. Using these images i'll trace them and be able to play with the shapes on illustrator.

Before playing around with tools i quickly made a paper clip typeface. Although this was a quick exercise i quite like the outcome, sort of quirky.
Next brief im going to get stuck into is the above. Its a rather short brief, not sure how to expand it just yet.

This time i'm trying to show how some metals conduct electricity. I personally think these are working but will have to see at the crits this week.

I'm taking the toy idea further since this makes the content more interesting then simply photographing materials bending and such. Instead i'm trying to give the toys personalities in short stories of two or 3 photos. This is much more humorous and engaging. The type will help show the funny side to the photos for example above is about thermoplastics which can change shape.
