So above are my final storyboards, ive tried to look at different ways to introduce the type on each ident, just slight differences that will make them interesting. Looking at how i will go from image to type, using fading light and movement of text. Also looked at how audio will work with the image and text, how the audio will enhance the tone of voice.
Rather then using any music ive chosen to use sounds which i think will work much better in setting the mood and making the audience more tense.

Ive taken screen grabs, one grab for each second plus right at the start, hence 11 screen grabs. Done this just to look at whats happening in when. Common theme is that film 4 isnt appearing for long enough, whether its because its fading out or just being rushed it needs working on.
Something ive realised is 10 seconds isnt long at all. I think a lot of people including myself at the start were over ambitious, its only until i begun working in after effects that i get a sense for time and whats realistic, im going to have to look at them again.

Again the type isnt fluent enough in its movement, although i do like the fact it twists away. Im hoping audio will make this a whole lot better but i do think the images work well in this one particularly.

I like how the final image of the back of the figure doesnt fade out the first few, instead it just goes straight to the type, i think this creates suspense for that split second because we expect it to fade but it doesnt. I like how the type moves up the screen as though its moving away, not sure i like the twist, it doesnt seem smooth, needs working on. audio isnt amazing either again need to work on it.

Actually quite happy with this one. Very simple idea, hopefully creating some suspense by slowing down the speed as we are drawn closer to the darkness and then suddenly rushing us through to see the details of what the idents advertising. I quite like how the type moves simply moves slightly round the space giving a 3d edge to it.

Again i dont feel as though im leaving enough time for the end, which is possibly the most important part, getting the vital information out there. Still need to put audio with this, think it'll work better once it has some. Prefer how the question is shown to us but still could do with some work.

For some silly reason bloggers uploaded only the left hand side of this grr. Anyway thankfully you get whats going on. I like how the image is introduced into the ident, starting on a positive. However i dont like how the light on the type at the start zig zags across, it doesnt flow right or look pleasing to the eye. It also kind of ruins the tone of voice, needs working on. And i think the ending needs working on, i need to make sure there's enough time to view when and where its showing.
Again following the same theme as the last storyboard, introducing a question that will hopefully make the viewer think and be excited about seeing what the answer to the question is by watching the zombie season.
Theres a running theme in my new storyboards of asking a question to the viewer. I hope that this will make the viewer more interested in the ident by involving them. I also hope it'll give more hints to the genre im advertising before the 'zombie season film 4' scene is shown at the end. It's more of a teaser as well, all in all i hope that by asking these questions i'll make the audience more interested in seeing the zombie season.
Lightings going to be important on this storyboard when showing the dead hand from the doorway. This is a key moment in this ident that will be dramatic to see.
This one is more image based. I think it would get tedious if all my idents were simply type driven, hopefully the audio and images will drive this idea and convey it to the audience. As before it will show the camera moving closer to the figure until distracted. Unlike before where we heard the bottle smash i want the type to come into play at this point showing us the details of what the ident is advertising. Then the image of the figure directly in front of the camera will appear. Im hoping this will work better then my first attempt at this idea.
My focus here is definitely the type, looking at how light will move across the screen highlighting the text i want the viewer to be reading. The image im having in it is showing the backs of the zombies, this wont last long and will just give a taster of whats to come in the zombie season. Hopefully making the viewer want to see more.
I've started re-drawing my storyboards now, looking more into how i want the type to flow on the screen and looking at its relationship with the images.
The problem with my previous storyboards is that they were way too image driven, i was trying to tell a story with still images which didnt look good and didnt work well which can be seen in my first 2 ident attempts. I want the type to play a much bigger role, its as important as the images, probably more.

The difference between the above and below images is massive. By manipulating they seem a lot sinister, just by looking at them we can tell the tone of voice which is what i hoped to achieve. Time to start playing on after effects with the type and images.

Above is a small selection of the photos ive taken for this project. From taking the photo i worked on photoshop with them trying to produce more sinister looking images which would be dark and although it sounds corny, evil looking.

Heres a couple of little test pieces, just looking at movement in aftereffects, slight slow movements giving time to read the type and show some awareness of spacial area. This is how i want my text to be moving in my idents. Making sure we having time to read the text and giving some thought into space.

Above is a quick storyboard of how id like type to be moving in my idents, these slow movments playing with light giving the viewer time to read it.

Above are different layouts for the type id like to incorporate into my idents. The highlighted red ones are the ones which i'll be using. Im happy with the type ive used. I think the way i've manipulated it gives it an edge, like normality has become destroyed which films like 28 days later conveys. How the world has been ruined, which is reflected in the type by using a standard, run of the mill font which is common and recognised.
I've tried to make sure that the layouts im using are readable, by using correct lighting i will hopefully ensure that the viewer can read it fluently.

I rather like the above, its nice to do something different, not something digital. It has a playful feel to it because of its hand crafted style however this isnt a feeling i want within my work. I could trace the photos and use the outlines as my type but i wouldn't feel in control enough of the lines and the shapes which i want to create. The type above doesnt have the same sharpness that the type below has either. Its a nice idea but it would need working on and really this project isnt a hand crafted one, it doesnt seem to fit in with the genre or tone of voice.

As i previously mentioned on some posters on my design context blog rather then using an existing font like broken 74 thats rough and grainy i think i'll work with arial which film 4 uses on its website. Hopefully to help show that my idents are for film 4 without having to say it because people will recognise the font. Ive started to play with effects i could make on the font and logo to give a more rusty feel, hopefully fitting into my tone of voice better.

The above 3 images show my storyboards which i used in my crit. Im happy with how the images are looking but the type looks simply rubbish. Ive not partically thought out the layout of the type, simply placed it anywhere in the frame. I havent addressed how the type will come onto the screen and leave the screen. I also dont think the type suits the tone of voice enough. It doesnt fit with film 4 which in the end is what im trying to advertise. I need to readdress this drastically .

Below is the rationale i wrote up before my crit.

Brief

Produce 5, ten second idents that promote a zombie horror season which will be showing this Halloween.

Subject and Rationale

I intend for my idents to create suspense. Using subtle lighting and clever use of audio I want to hopefully draw viewers in and want them wanting more.

I think the best horrors are those that don’t show the villain therefore I wont show what the zombies look like, which will hopefully make the viewer want to watch the zombie season.

The audio will play a huge part, since we can’t use video footage I’ll be using a lot of photography which will hopefully look visually good drawing the viewer in.

My target audience is fairly broad, teenagers up to 40. These are the main age ranging audience for zombie movies therefore its them Im targeting.

Design Direction

The typefaces im wanting to work want to have a grainy look to them. Definitely san serif, probably exaggerated in weight. Typefaces such as broken74.

I really like how sin city is dark and sinister simply by using greyscale images. There’s a lot of contrast between black and white in the film which is something I want to play with in my idents. Hopefully creating a more sinister effect.

My idents aren’t happy or fun, its not pixar etc so it only seems right that I use photography for the ‘real thing’. Rather then vector based drawings or any type of drawings I think it would just seem too cartoony.

Really like these, they look visually better then the photos i used for the previous idents i created. Im going to test these out in my next idents. They seem a lot more sinister, something more supernatural about them which i like.

Unlike the previous there isnt enough of those deep reds, mainly because the lighting wasnt dim enough when i took the photo like in the below photo. Still think i want to try out a sin city style black and white contrasting photos.

Quite like how this one looks, contrast between black and red is nice and looks good. The deep oranges and reds connote blood and make it look like a horror picture.

Fuzy kind of effect which i guess makes the viewer want to be able to focus on the image more, i think it looks more frustrating then anything else
Another subtle grainy effect, i was hoping to give it a kind of edge that would be sinister but it just looks like the photos been sewn together.
This has a subtle ripple in the middle that makes that little more abstract, the texture is also quite subtle and gives a nice effect that shows everything isnt normal. However it isnt real enough, i want viewers to think, crap, this could happen, zombies could be real.
Started to play with how id like images to look in my idents. The above image has a collage look to it, although i do like this sort of style it wouldnt fit in with the tone of voice of my work.
